This summer I had lots of layovers that I tried to make the most of. If you have layovers in these places, here are some thoughts from mine: In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, take the subway door-to-door from the airport to the Batu Caves and Buddhist temple on the north side of KL - very easy to get to and some good exercise climbing up the many colorful steps to explore the cavernous caves at the top, an interesting experience climbing up, rather than down, to get to the caves, and the main cave is free! Another site along the way is the twin Petronas Towers that I only got to see from a distance this time. In Taipei, Taiwan, Sydney, Australia, and Auckland, New Zealand, I didn't have time to leave the airports, but saw enough to know I want to come back and do them right. Santiago, Chile was great, hanging out in the Plaza de Armas, eating delicious street food, seeing the cathedral, monument to indigenous people, fountain, and statues there, and learning about the history of Spanish settlement there - fascinating and the view of the Andes while flying into the city was gorgeous!
